A word before we begin

RASP helps a familiar artifact speak again.

“We begin by accepting what cannot change. Then we ask why its meaning no longer lands.”

RASP means (Re)signing Artifacts to Spark Perception. Bring a liturgy and choose one thing used in worship. Establish what must be preserved, diagnose the cultural gap, then test changes that make its meaning perceptible again.

01Become resigned

Name the truth, material, or requirement that cannot be surrendered.

02Confirm the cultural read

Compare a grounded “then” with a contemporary “now” you confirm or correct.

03Re-sign the artifact

Test bounded changes, then reflect on the meanings they open.

The method

Accept the truth. Read the culture. Re-sign the artifact.

RASP attends to the concrete things worship uses—bread, wine, water, oil, light, books, vessels, and tables—and asks how their intended meaning can become perceptible again.

R

(Re)signing
First become resigned to what is non-negotiable. Only then consider changing how the artifact is handled or encountered.

A

Artifacts
Attend to the actual things used in worship, not a competing set of abstract focus categories.

S

to Spark
Ground the “then” in the 15-entry knowledge base, confirm or correct the “now,” and only then name the cultural dead space.

P

Perception
Ask which meanings are strengthened and which become newly accessible through the change.

The pastoral check

Every proposal keeps the non-negotiable in view.

A RASP proposal should be concrete enough to try, modest enough to reverse, and honest about what could become distracting, exclusionary, theatrical, or contrary to the rite.

3 · Resign

What must be preserved?

Before proposing any change, name the truth you are resigned to—the material, meaning, or liturgical requirement no re-signing may surrender.

RASP grounds the historical “then” and drafts the contemporary “now.” You review that draft before any gap or proposal is developed.
