The Rev. Canon Kevin Olds preaching from a church pulpit, wearing a white alb and green stole

A word before we begin

GASP makes enacted meaning more evocative.

“Name what the liturgy should evoke. Then bring the tools together with care.”

GASP means Gestures, Awareness, Speech, and Presence. It attends to bodies, liturgical history, and voice. Presence has a different shape: prepare to lead, then consider the genuine inner disposition this occasion calls forth. Read through one part of the method, or bring the whole toolkit together.

The method, in plain language

Meaning is carried by more than words.

GASP helps a worship planner name what a liturgy should evoke, then attend to Gestures, historical Awareness, Speech, and Presence. Presence is not one more performance technique: it is prepared, intentional leadership inhabited from within.

Related tools, different work

Use the part of the method the moment needs.

Historical Awareness gives groundwork and points toward further study. Gestures and Speech make embodied and verbal signs available for close analysis. Presence takes a different form: it begins with preparation and intentional leadership, then reflects on the inner disposition appropriate to the theme or occasion.

The pastoral check

Evocative is not theatrical.

A GASP pass should help the whole liturgy evoke the identified feast, season, celebration, Scripture passage, or message. Prepare it carefully, keep any outward adjustment specific enough to test, and remember that signs remain open to more than one meaning.

  1. Name the theme. Say what this liturgy is meant to evoke.
  2. Choose a moment. Avoid redesigning the whole service.
  3. Choose a GASP pass. Analyze Gestures, Awareness, or Speech; reflect through Presence; or bring the whole toolkit together.
  4. Respond fittingly. Name an adjustment and its limit for outward signs. For Presence, name preparation and consider inner disposition without prescribing it.
